This project helps farmers in Tabora to improve their production through working in partnership with smallholder farmers to improve the quality, quantity and value of their produce, so that they can support their families with more resilient livelihoods. We support farmers to gain access to seeds, land and markets, so that they can strengthen their income and revitalise communities by expanding employment.
Itulu, Tabora
During the year, farmer get rain for only six months. In that rain season, farmers work hard to produce enough food which will take them to the next harvest. When dry season comes they are forced to be idle until next season. It is like having employment for six month and becoming unemployed for the other six months.
Farming requires water and soil. Flooding water during the rainy season is reserved in ponds for use during dry season. This is the way to extend the rain season for some moths so that farmers can continue producing instead of being idle in their homes.
Farmers plant their crops on badly degraded soil and end up harvesting about tenth of what they should get. That is the main reason of getting hunger every year. Using cow dung to fertilize the soil gives makes harvest. We shoe them how to use cow dung and other domestic animal wastes to fertilize the soil.
